5 Simple Tricks for Cheering Up Your Home

We don’t typically think of inanimate objects as being sad, but it’s something that happens. Consider your home’s decor. You are busy with your job, family, and everyday life. Could it be that your home is feeling neglected? Things feel a bit off the moment you walk through the front door, but for some reason you can't quite put your finger on it?

If that's your problem, it's high time to cheer up your home's decor. We've come up with five easy and affordable ways to accomplish this. You’ll be amazed with the results. Cheering up your home will not only lift your spirits, it will recapture your home's former glory, making it the happy and welcoming place you remember.

1. Bring in Cheerful Color

Color affects mood. It can make you happy and can cheer up your home. If your home is awash with cool, neutral colors, that atmosphere might translate to boredom. Try introducing brighter, warmer colors into your rooms—red, orange, yellow, or pink will energize your spaces.

Color not only reshapes a space, it influences your mood and others around you. Certain colors help to make the most of each day and increase your energy. Find fun colors that inspire you. You don’t have to totally rework the color scheme, just add pops of color with pillows and accessories. Find a happy accent color or two that will work with your existing color palette.

2. Make a Quick Change

Is there something in your home you have been wanting to change? These may be just the things to cheer up your home.

  • Switch out those faded curtains for updated blinds or shutters.
  • Freshen up your coffee table with art books and exotic objects.
  • Rearrange your furniture. It makes a huge difference.
  • Frame your kids' artwork. Create a colorful gallery wall.
  • Change out old bed linens with new hotel-quality sheets and bath towels.
  • Artfully arrange your bookshelf display. Remove clutter and space out books and decorative accessories.
  • Purchase a colorful rug. Adding a large, colorful area rug will energize a room.
  • Mix up your dinnerware. Use different pattern, colors and shapes to set an eclectic dining table.
  • Display bright textiles in the kitchen. This is an easy and cheap way to up the mood.

Whether large or small if it’s been bugging you, it is time to make these small changes. Set aside a budget to make your changes and do it as soon as possible.

3. Lighten Up

A home without adequate light is depressing. If you don’t get enough natural light, you may actually suffer from the 'seasonal blues', a medically recognized condition known as seasonal affective disorder.

It's time to get rid of heavy curtains, shades and blinds and flood your rooms with natural light. There are lots of window treatments such as semi-translucent shades or sheer curtains that give you privacy without light to filter throughout the space.

If your home is short on windows or you live in a basement apartment, look into light therapy. These specialized types of lamps and light bulbs simulate natural light and are designed to improve your mood and energy levels. Or simply replace existing light bulbs with brighter ones and add a few inexpensive lamps around the house. You will get a mental boost and your rooms will look brighter and more stylish.

Another way to add natural light is to hang mirrors around the house. You can increase the amount of light by placing mirrors in dark areas to reflect light. For example, hang one large or a grouping of smaller mirrors across from a big window to help illuminate a dark stairway or foyer.

4. Declutter and Clean It Up

There is nothing cheerful about a messy home. If you’re sick and tired of coming home to a dirty, cluttered house do something about it. Get rid of unnecessary items. Walk into any room, look around and ask yourself these questions: Is it something I really need? Is it sentimental? Have I used this item lately? Would I buy the same thing again? If it’s broken is it fixable? When I move is it worth keeping?

Start by tackling one room or area each day. Once you’ve covered the entire house immediately tidy up things as you see something out of place. Schedule a time to do a bi-weekly or monthly whole house cleaning. Keeping your home clean and organized will create a joyful aura.

5. Add Plants and Flowers

You know how it makes you happy when you receive a gift of flowers? The same applies to your home. Bring in fragrant blooms, arrange them in a lovely vase and place them on a table. It’s a sure-fire way to add color and fragrance.

If you can afford it, bring in a fresh flowers once a week. Many grocery stores and membership warehouses have small floral departments offering seasonal arrangements and single stems at reasonable prices. Bunches of carnations and alstroemerias are always an economical option.

Better yet, if you have a flower garden bring in cuttings to brighten up a room for free. If fresh flowers aren’t in the cards buy a blooming plant. Enjoy the colorful flowers inside the house for a few weeks. Once the blooms are spent transplant it into an outdoor flower bed.

Nice tips, for sure. Am putting a guest room together in a very light, subdued, calm tones. Have everything you mention covered except that extra pop of color, so have just decided to add at least two plaid pillow covers that will go well with a bird mobile I'm creating. The main base color is included, but the covers and mobile have a mix of bright color. Trying to focus on pattern scales so everything comes together right. Thanks for encouragement to be bold with the pop! :)
